Who are the top five breakout stars of the 2019/20 PSL season?

Last season (2018/19) saw the likes of Fortune Makaringe and Mothobi Mvala establish themselves in the top-flight league.

But what about those who have only just announced themselves at the highest level this term?

Check out Goal's top five breakout stars:

  2. Sipho Mbule, SuperSport United, August 2019

    Sipho Mbule - SuperSport United

When the current season started the 22-year-old was behind Dean Furman and Teboho Mokoena in the pecking order in SuperSport's midfield.

However, Mbule forced his way into the starting line-up with some impressive displays whenever he was given a chance to start and he cemented his place in the team alongside Furman and Mokoena in a 4-3-3 formation under coach Kaitano Tembo.

The South Africa under-23 international, who netted three times in 28 league matches, never looked back as he was named PSL Player of the Month for November 2019 and he is the favourite for the PSL Young Player of the Season

  3. Lesedi Kapinga has joined Mamelodi Sundowns - July 2020

    Lesedi Kapinga - Black Leopards

Not many fans of the PSL would have been aware of the diminutive attacker’s name until the 2019/20 campaign, having made little impact at Black Leopards in the previous season.

Kapinga terrorized defences with his blistering pace and silky skills while creating and scoring goals for Leopards, where he netted five goals and registered five assists as a key player for the team in the league.

However, Leopards lost their star player to PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns in July 2020, having also been linked with Orlando Pirates, and much is expected from the 25-year-old player ahead of the 2020/21 season.

  4. Rushine De Reuck of Maritzburg United, February 2020

Rushine De Reuck - Maritzburg United

The talented defender is another young local player who took giant steps towards stardom having been with Maritzburg since the 2017/18 campaign, but he came of age in the 2019/20 season.

A tough-tackling defender now known for his technique and ball-playing ability, De Reuck was a pillar of strength in the Team of Choice's backline which conceded 27 goals, making it the league's joint third-best defence.

The 24-year-old player was also an ever-present in the Maritzburg starting line-up, having played 30 matches as they kept 13 clean sheets, and many have called for his inclusion in the Bafana Bafana squad.

  5. Ricardo Goss of Bidvest Wits April 2020

    Ricardo Goss - Bidvest Wits

Having been considered to be the second-choice goalkeeper behind Brandon Petersen at Bidvest Wits at the beginning of the current season, Goss had to dislodge his former South Africa national under-23 teammate.

That's exactly what Goss did and he established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the country with his consistent displays between the sticks - keeping nine clean sheets from 19 league matches in his breakthrough season.

The former Lamontville Golden Arrows shot-stopper played an instrumental role in helping Wits finish the season with the league's joint-best defensive record (22 goals conceded) in the league and a Bafana Bafana call-up might just be around the corner for him.

  6. Sphelele Mkhulise, Mamelodi Sundowns, August 2020

    Sphelele Mkhulise - Mamelodi Sundowns

The promising midfielder grabbed the opportunity given to him by coach Pitso Mosimane with both hands and he was a regular for Sundowns as they made the final push for the PS title.

Blessed with vision, tricky feet, good technique, and passing ability, Mkhulise enjoyed regular game time in a star-studded Masandawana squad as the link between the team's midfield and attack in what was his second season in the elite league.

The two-footed player, who formed a good understanding with key attackers Themba Zwane and Gaston Sirino, made 22 appearances in the league and he netted two goals and there is no doubt that Mkhulise is destined to be quality player.
