#1 Russia humiliate Saudi ArabiaRussia’s emphatic 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia was exactly what the doctor ordered for the hosts! Under the watchful eyes of President Vladmir Putin and an expectant nation, Sbornaya thrashed a poor Saudi side and it was no less than they deserved. Goals from Yuri Gazinsky, Denis Cheryshev (2), Arem Dzyuba and the impressive Aleksandr Golovin sealed a win that will live long in the memories of the locals.
#2 Jose Gimenez breaks Egyptian heartsThe Pharaohs had defended for their lives and had goalie Mohamed El-Shenawy to thank for more-than-decent saves on a couple of occasions. They had also looked set to steal a point without the benched Mohamed Salah. However, José Giménez had other ideas and his strike in the 89th minute was a kick in the teeth of the North Africans who would have felt they were good value for a point over the course of the game. The Uruguayans won’t care though and the late, late goal made victory taste even sweeter.

#3 Cristiano Ronaldo lights up the stadium
With Portugal a goal down against Spain and needing some sort of inspiration to steal a point, you always got the feeling that Ronaldo was going to be the man to do it. Standing over the ball with his eyes firmly fixed on the target, there was surely to be no other result other than the net bulging. And he tucked the free-kick away emphatically to seal his hat-trick as it ended 3-3 against La Roja. Ronaldo has now set a benchmark with his treble of goals and it will surely be tough to match that excellent individual display over the course of the tournament!
