South Korea World Cup 2022 squad, predicted line-up versus Brazil and star players

South Korea made their World Cup debut in 1954 and have qualified for every edition since 1986, with their best-ever finish coming in 2002 when they reached the semi-finals.

In 2018, they made an early exit from the competition after crashing out from the group stages.

Can they do better this time around?

They have qualified from Group H alongside Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal. They started the tournament with a goalless draw against Uruguay before narrowly losing to Cameroon but they pipped Portugal 2-1 in the final game to book their knockout berth.

Paulo Bento will hope that his squad can cause a couple more upsets in the knockouts.

    GOALKEEPERS

Kim Seung-gyu has been the first choice for Bento between the sticks. The 31-year-old is a regular for Al-Shabab and has been in tremendous form in the Saudi Arabian top tier.

Jo Hyeon-woo is another contender for the starting berth as he has shown consistency with Ulsan Hyundai.

Song Bum-keun who has impressed previously with the U23 set up is also in the squad, having made just one senior appearance for his country.

    DEFENDERS

Bento likes to set his team up with a four-man back-line.

Kim Young-gwon will have the responsibility to marshall the defence as he is one of the most experienced candidates with close to 100 international caps.

His partner-in-crime at the heart of defence is likely to be Kim Min-Jae, who plies his trade with Serie A outfit Napoli. He likes to chip in with important goals during set-pieces, which will come in handy for South Korea at the World Cup.

Kim Jin-Su of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors has so far played as the left-back. while at right back, Kim Moon-hwan is Bento's preferred player.

    MIDFIELDERS

The Taegeuk Warriors have a comprehensive midfield with the right blend of youth and experience.

Hwang In-beom has a solid presence in central midfield with his ability to break down opposition attacks and win back possession.

He is perfectly complemented by FSV Mainz's Lee Jae-Sung who oozes confidence on the ball and likes to control the tempo of the match.

    ATTACKERS

The strongest area of South Korea's team is definitely their attack. Son Heung-min is the standout name, and the Tottenham winger is going despite being an injury doubt before the World Cup after suffering a facial injury in the Champions League

He is joined by Hwang Hee-chan who plies his trade for Wolves in the Premier League, and the two will play alongside Hwang Ui-jo and Cho Gue-sung going further up the field.

The former plays for Olympiacos on loan from Nottingham Forest, while the latter lines up for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and has scored four goals in eight games this season.

  • SOUTH KOREA PREDICTED XI VS BRAZIL

Bento mostly likes to set his team up in a 4-4-2 formation and in some occasions he has opted for a slight variation in 4-1-4-1.

Young-gwon and Min-Jae will likely be the two centre-backs flanked by Jin-Su and Moon-hwan on the left and right flank respectively.

In-beom and Jung Woo-young should pair up in central midfield.

Kwon Chang-hoon and Jeong Woo-yeong can take their positions in the wide areas.

Son is an undisputed starter in the forward line and he might be joined by Cho Gue-sung.
