Wrexham star Sam Smith reveals what Ryan Reynolds told him after his brilliant 'kung fu' goal helped seal promotion to the Championship

Star striker Sam Smith turned hero for Wrexham last Saturday as his brace helped the Welsh club beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 and secure their third consecutive promotion to the Championship, the only club in the history of English football to achieve the feat. After Oliver Rathbone broke the deadlock for the Red Dragons in the 15th minute, Smith stepped up and doubled the team's lead with a stunning goal. The 27-year-old then completed the rout with a late header in the second half.

In a chat with the BBC, Smith was asked about what Wrexham co-owner and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds felt about his opening goal, to which the player said: "He said I was a 'beast' and that it was a 'kung fu finish'. I think he asked if I'd been watching him in his films and he just said he was proud and delighted for me.

"My dad met him today, he watches all of his films. He was star-struck and he's 67 years old, so I think he was more delighted with meeting him than watching me score. It's surreal meeting them [Reynolds and McElhenney], they're both amazing people. They're down to earth, nice guys."

Hollywood co-owners Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's long-term goal remains to make the Welsh club qualify for the English top flight. Sharing his thoughts on the club's ambition of playing in the Premier League, Smith added: "Hopefully we can. It's a tough league. I don't think anyone expected us to get promoted out of this league [League One]. This club is like no other, anything can happen. I'd like to hope we could do it and I could be a part of it."

Phil Parkinson's side will play their final match of the 2024-25 campaign on May 3 as they take on Lincoln City away from home.
