'I'm not saying from Real Madrid!' - Ruben Amorim demands Man Utd to sign 'big players' in summer transfer window despite financial contraints

The United boss believes that his squad is already strong, but is lacking in a few key areas that can help transform their fortunes. Amorim claims that only by bringing in players with the right mentality can help make an important impact at Old Trafford, but he may find trouble when it comes to buying these players. The Portuguese coach admitted that he was not expecting players from the level of Real Madrid to walk through the door, however 'big players' will still cost the club dearly and, when there are a number of positions in urgent need of a revamp, their spending may be limited by financial constraints.

Speaking ahead of United's clash against Manchester City, Amorim said: "I just want to focus on our strengths and bring one or two players, big players.

"We need to focus, we are doing all the stuff to be next season so much better. In my idea, I cannot manage this thing of ‘in four years we will try something’. We need to be so much better. This is a massive club

"It’s characteristics that we don’t have in our squad, trying to see the gaps, when I say big players I’m not saying from Real Madrid etcetera, it’s big players in the way I see the game."

In the past decade, United have not been shy about spending huge sums of money to bring in talent to the club. The problem for Amorim, however, is that United have spent that money rather abjectly. His squad is filled with huge numbers of unwanted deadwood that will be difficult to move on given their high salaries and, without raising revenue through sales and a huge drop in the wage bill, Amorim may struggle to make any signings, let alone the big ones he desires.

Amorim's difficult start to life at Old Trafford will have done little to convince the United hierarchy to give him free reign over transfers. The club languish in 13th and are set to record their worst-ever Premier League finish. The one and only silver lining remaining is the chance of silverware and Champions League qualification via success in the Europa League - they travel to Lyon on Thursday.
