MLS Power Rankings: Philadelphia Union put pressure on Vancouver Whitecaps in race for Supporters' Shield, while San Diego and Columbus both secure important wins

The Philadelphia Union are officially putting pressure on the Vancouver Whitecaps. Bradley Carnell's men secured a stoppage-time victory against Charlotte FC over the weekend, while the Canadian outfit fell to the Columbus Crew in an Eastern Conference clash.

Philly is back at the top of the Supporters' Shield, with a two-point lead over the Whitecaps - though Vancouver has a game in hand.

Matchday 19 of the MLS campaign featured some big performances, highlighted by the Eastern Conference lighting up. All top-five teams in the conference all secured big wins, highlighting just how competitive this is becoming just over midway through the season.

In the West, San Diego FC defeated MNUFC in a battle between No. 2 and 3, while Austin FC came from behind to knock off RBNY as they crept into the final playoff spot.

With the Gold Cup break now on the way, teams will have a brief period to rest up and get healthy before games restart in 10 days.

Who's leading the pack, and who's falling short of expectations? GOAL presents the latest 2025 MLS Power Rankings.

  • CF Montreal 2025Imagn

    30CF Montreal

    Prior Ranking: 30

    Results: Defeated Houston Dynamo 3-1

Ramifications: Huge performance and a much-needed win for the Canadian side. In their first victory across all competitions in their last six games, they were completely dominant, with Prince Owusu and Jalen Neal getting the goals.

They're still last in the East, but this was a big performance.

  • 29Los Angeles Galaxy

    Prior Ranking: 28

    Results: Drew CITY 3-3

Ramifications: This was Gabriel Pec's best performance of the season, as the 2024 MLS Newcomer of the Year bagged a brace, including what he thought was a late winner. But the theme of poor defending once again took over. LA had three points on the cards, but conceded a 95th-minute equalizer.

Has to be frustrating for Pec, though, who carried them throughout the match.

  • 28St. Louis CITY SC

    Prior Ranking: 29

    Result: Drew LA 3-3

Ramifications: Joao Klauss's hat-trick secured a point in a match in which they arguably deserved nothing - so, in that context, this is a good result for CITY. The Brazilian forward found the back of the net in the 35th, 47th, and 95th minutes, bringing his 2025 goal total to five.

It hasn't been the best of campaigns for him, but this was a brilliant performance from the veteran forward. For CITY, though, they're still 14th in the West and without a permanent head coach.

  • 27Toronto FC

    Prior Ranking: 27

    Result: Did not play

Ramifications: Remain 14th in the East on 13 points through 17 matches

  • 26Atlanta United

    Prior Ranking: 25

    Result: Lost to NYCFC 4-0

    Ramifications: Really bad. Honestly? Embarrassing.

Conceding three goals in less than five minutes and losing 4-0 is a poor look for the entire team, and for Ronny Deila on the touchline. They panicked, and nobody stepped up in terms of leadership on the pitch.

Despite spending more than $40M on three DPs in the past 12 months, they're on just 17 points, sit 13th in the East, and are eight points back from a play-in game.

  • DC United vs RSLImagn

    25D.C. United

    Prior Ranking: 23

    Result: Lost to RSL 2-0

Ramifications: Another week, another D.C. shutout. This was their eighth match without a goal this season. They're really struggling on nights when their attack doesn't click. They've conceded nine goals in their last two games alone.

A big summer transfer window looms right now. They need reinforcements if they want to make any sort of playoff push in the second half of the campaign.

  • 24Sporting Kansas City

    Prior Ranking: 24

Result: Lost to FC Dallas 4-2

Ramifications: They should feel a bit aggrieved. Khiry Shelton's sending off changed the game, and review showed that there was very little contact on a play that led to the defender being sent off midway through the second half.

Regardless, Sporting took an early lead eight minutes in and never really built on it. They had the momentum and confidence to put this to bed early, but they didn't. The have just one win in their last seven, and still no permanent head coach after Peter Vermes' firing early in the season.

  • 23FC Dallas

    Prior Ranking: 26

    Result: Defeated SKC 4-2

Ramifications: What a performance from Dallas. Petar Musa scored his fifth goal of the season, and Lucho Acosta scored a brace as they came from behind after conceding early to secure a massive three points.

The result didn't come without controversy, as Sporting's Khiry Shelton saw red for an apparent ghost foul on a second yellow, but that's not for FCD to worry about. This was a near-complete showing, with FCD scoring on four of their six attempts on goal, and meeting their xG of 4.

Up to 10th in the West, they're now just one point out from ninth-place Colorado, who occupy the play-in game spot in the conference.

  • 22San Jose Earthquakes

    Prior Ranking: 21

    Result: Drew Portland 1-1

Ramifications: If you're San Jose, you are thrilled with a point - as you deserved nothing more from the match. After an early sending off in the second half from Ian Harkes, they were reduced to 10 and bunkered to try and maintain a scoreless draw. Portland got the go-ahead, which forced them into action, and Preston Judd scored with almost the final touch of the game to secure the draw.

It wasn't a good performance from the Earthquakes, but they managed to walk away with something - for Bruce Arena, that's a positive.

  • 21Real Salt Lake

    Prior Ranking: 22

    Result: Defeated D.C. United 2-0

Ramifications: Big result for RSL, who desperately needed the confidence and the three points. In a similar position to D.C., but in the West, heading into the game, this was a defining moment for Pablo Mastroeni and his team.

Johnny Russell scored his first goal for the club since signing as a free agent, and Zavier Gozo bagged his second career goal to give them the victory. The result snapped a seven-match losing streak.

  • Colorado rapids 2025Imagn

    20Colorado Rapids

    Prior Ranking: 20

    Result: Lost to Orlando 1-0

Ramifications: Colorado had little going for them - just two total shots on goal across 14 attempts isn't good enough, and Chris Armas knows that. That's three straight losses for Colorado, with just two wins in their last 10. They're falling flat and out of contention in the West.

  • 19Chicago Fire

    Prior Ranking: 19

    Result: Lost to Nashville 2-0

Ramifications: Simply put, the Fire were beaten by a better opponent, and it was a far more respectable result considering their first meeting this campaign saw them battered 7-2. Chicago didn't play badly, per se. They put seven shots on target - Nashville was just more clinical.

Gregg Berhalter's men have been on a really good run of late, but this definitely served as a wake-up call. They have to perform at a higher level to compete with the league's best this season.

  • 18Houston Dynamo

    Prior Ranking: 18

Result: Lost to CF MTL 3-1

Ramifications: Ben Olsen will want to put this one behind the team immediately. It was Houston's worst showing of the season so far, and they just didn't look the part all game. They out-possessed and out-shot Montreal, but couldn't get anything going without Jack McGlynn, who is on USMNT duty at the Gold Cup.

  • 17Austin FC

    Prior Ranking: 17

    Result: Defeated RBNY 2-1

Ramifications: A redemption match for Brandon Vazquez. The U.S. international scored an own-goal early, and atoned for his error by scoring a late winner to secure three points. Their second-straight win was a much-needed victory ahead of a brief break from action due to the Gold Cup.

  • 16Charlotte FC

    Prior Ranking: 16

    Result: Lost to Philadelphia 2-1

Ramifications: Frustrating result for Dean Smith's side. Wilfried Zaha returned to the scoresheet, but they conceded a stoppage-time winner to Philly - they likely deserved at least a point.

Charlotte has not won back-to-back games since April.

  • RBNY Austin FCImagn

    15New York Red Bulls

    Prior Ranking: 15

Result: Lost to Austin FC 2-1

Ramifications: Their attack fell flat on the road in Austin, mustering just one shot on target despite 13 total attempts. They out-possessed and out-passed Austin, but nothing came from it, with little to no ideas coming about in the final third from their creators.

Their four-match winning streak was snapped.

  • 14New England Revolution

    Prior Ranking: 13

Result: Lost 1-0 to FC Cincinnati

Ramifications: Tough one to lose, but what a brilliant stretch for Caleb Porter's men. With the result, their stupendous nine-match unbeaten streak was snapped, their first loss in MLS action since April 5.

Frustrating defeat with that, too. They out-possessed Cincy 61.5 percent to 38.5 and really forced offensive pressure all game - but when it came to shooting, FCC were just more clinical.

  • 13Portland Timbers

    Prior Ranking: 14

    Result: Drew San Jose 1-1

Ramifications: Incredibly frustrating result for Phil Neville's squad. The Earthquakes were reduced to 10 men in the 53rd minute, and they only managed to find one goal with the advantage. Come stoppage time, they conceded and left with a point.

Fine margins define seasons, and this is one in which it was two points dropped for Portland.

  • 12Los Angeles FC

    Prior Ranking: 11

    Result: Did not play

Ramifications: Sit fifth in the West on 26 points through 16 matches.

  • 11FC Cincinnati

    Prior Ranking: 6

    Result: Defeated New England 1-0

Ramifications: It was a close affair, but Kevin Denkey's 26th-minute goal was the difference as FCC secured a huge result against a red-hot Revolution side. Following a four-game skid without a win, Pat Noonan's men really needed this. Back up to second with three points, FCC trails Philly by four points, but maintain their spot just behind.

  • Seattle Sounders FC v San Diego FCGetty Images Sport

    10Seattle Sounders

    Prior Ranking: 10

    Result: Did not play

Ramifications: Sit sixth in the West on 26 points with 18 matches played.

  • 9New York City FC

    Prior Ranking: 12

    Result: Defeated Atlanta United 4-0

Ramifications: A Thursday game before the weekend slate, NYCFC battered the Five Stripes, with a terrific four-minute spell in the second half seeing them score three times between the 55th and 59th minute to secure the result. During that span, Hannes Wolf bagged a brace, and they took advantage of the Atlanta defense capitulating from the inside out.

A big three points has them up to 28 on the season, sitting in seventh, but just five points out from second.

  • 8Orlando City

    Prior Ranking: 7

    Result: Defeated Colorado 1-0

Ramifications: Narrow win, but an important one that snapped a two-match losing streak. Martin Ojeda bagged the winner, scoring his ninth of the season as he continues to excel for the Lions. With 14 goal contributions, he leads the club in goals and assists, and has been the difference-maker.

Three points have them up to fifth in the East.

  • 7Columbus Crew

    Prior Ranking: 9

    Result: Defeated Vancouver 2-1

Ramifications: The perfect result for Wilfried Nancy's men. Diego Rossi scored the winner just 21 minutes in, and the Uruguayan star is up to nine goals on the season.

The result snapped a six-match winless streak for the Crew, and with it coming against the Western Conference leaders, perhaps it sparks a run of form for the club heading into the Leagues Cup.

  • 6Inter Miami

    Prior Ranking: 8

    Result: Did not play

Ramifications: Sit sixth in the East on 29 points with 16 matches played.

  • Nashville SC v New York Red BullsGetty Images Sport

    5Nashville SC

    Prior Ranking: 5

    Result: Defeated Chicago 2-0

Ramifications: Another week, another top performance from Nashville. Sam Surridge is up to 12 goals on the season after scoring the dagger, while Hany Mukhtar looks reinvented after a down 2024 season - and is back to his best. The German midfielder scored the winner, bringing his season total to eight goals and seven assists.

  • 4Minnesota United

    Prior Ranking: 3

Result: Lost to San Diego 4-2

Ramifications: Down to their third-string goalkeeper, the Loons fell victim to two errors in net and collapsed late under pressure. MLS debutant Wessel Speel did his best between the posts, but muffed a penalty kick save and got caught out, seeing Anders Dreyer score from half field. Unlucky.

Good to see Kelvin Yeboah back on the score sheet, otherwise.

  • 3San Diego FC

    Prior Ranking: 4

    Result: Defeated MNUFC 4-2

Ramifications: Anders Dreyer, MLS Newcomer of the Year AND MLS MVP? Why not. What a phenomenal performance from the Denmark international on the road, spearheading their attack in a match between 2 and 3 in the West. Mikey Varas set them up brilliantly, and they responded brilliantly, scoring four times after conceding early. Fantastic performance.

  • 2Philadelphia Union

    Prior Ranking: 2

    Result: Defeated Charlotte FC 2-1

Ramifications: Huge result, and one hell of a winner, too, as 21-year-old Markus Anderson found the back of the net in the 98th minute, smashing home after a Cavan Sullivan whiff of the ball in the box. Without Tai Baribo available, they struggled, but found the result - and that's all that matters.

  • Blackmon Vancouver WhitecapsImagn

    1Vancouver Whitecaps

    Prior Ranking: 1

    Result: Lost to Columbus 2-1

Ramifications: Tough result for the Whitecaps. Shorthanded due to Gold Cup call-ups, they fought valiantly, but without five key starters, fell short. The good news is Ryan Gauld is nearly back, and with his return should come a massive boost to their Western Conference title and Supporters' Shield hopes.
