Memphis Depay left baffled after Corinthians antics see Brazilian federation BAN 'ball-stand' skill - as Neymar weighs in on debate with 'too much whining' jibe

Dutch forward Memphis took to showboating during a recent clash between Corinthians and Palmeiras. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) are looking to clamp down on such antics, with a lengthy statement including the message: “There are different circumstances in which a player should be cautioned with a CA (yellow card) for unsportsmanlike conduct, including showing a lack of respect for football.”

Former Manchester United and Barcelona star Memphis is struggling to understand why a nation famed for its flair and love of the “beautiful game” would want to rein in displays of individual expression that excite fans and get them off their seats.

Memphis has said: “Let’s concentrate on rules that can improve the game and focus on the commercial side of football, which benefits clubs, fans, and players, instead of these ridiculous announcements.

“I actually came to Brazil to witness the 'jogo bonito' first hand, but now the CBF announced that no player can stand on the ball or they will receive a yellow card. It's not that it's a significant factor in football, I see no issue here.

“Brazilian football is ascending... and deserves global recognition! There's so much talent here. The joy and passion we express on the field should have no boundaries. So I truly wonder about the direction of the CBF: who is deciding the future of this beautiful footballing nation?”

Brazil’s all-time leading goal scorer Neymar, who is back in his homeland with Santos, is another asking questions of why authorities are trying to remove a sense of fun. He replied to a post on the subject from the Denilson Show by saying: “Football is getting more and more boring. Too much whining.”

Neymar, like Memphis, has always been a player that wants to entertain on the pitch. He is famed for his quick feet and trickery, but has faced accusations himself of acting in an unsportsmanlike manner when embarrassing opponents with his antics.
