Shaw's disastrous 2024 has got even worse with United confirming that the left-back will miss the opening games of the Premier League campaign with a calf problem. The 29-year-old sustained his latest injury at the start of pre-season training, and he's not expected to return until after the first international break.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Shaw <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/not-advantage-erik-ten-hag-confirms-fresh-luke-shaw-blow-man-utd-boss-defends-injury-plagued-defender-role/blt50bcd3facfac156e" target="_blank">suffered a hamstring injury in February</a> that forced him to miss the remainder of United's season, including the FA Cup final victory. <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/gareth-southgate-luke-shaw-england-euro-2024-squad-harry-maguire/blt330c03b02cea5676" target="_blank">Gareth Southgate included him in his England squad</a> for the European Championship but he wasn't ready until the quarter-final and managed just 177 minutes in Germany. Another setback to start the new campaign is the last thing Shaw wanted.

United boss Erik ten Hag could turn to 17-year-old Harry Amass as Shaw's replacement. The teenager was <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/harry-amass-man-utd-teenager-left-back/bltbfa67515c9864c4d" target="_blank">a standout during the Red Devils' pre-season tour</a> of the United States, starting all three friendlies, and was praised for making <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/erik-ten-hag-man-utd-harry-amass-improve-verdict-on-teenager-s-eye-catching-pre-season/bltb9b7dad9bc187cf8#csb1dec86222d7378e" target="_blank">"big steps"</a> by his manager during the tour.

Lisandro Martinez played as a makeshift left-back in the Community Shield and the Argentinian could start there in the season opener against Fulham on Friday if Ten Hag doesn't believe Amass is ready.
