  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to unleash their fury on the out-of-favour Chiesa. The Italian winger was signed from Juventus last summer but has struggled to make an impact, with some supporters unhappy that he has not broken into head coach Arne Slot's plans despite being a big-earner.

  • WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

One user, @keithmeehan89, wrote on X: "And we laugh at United making silly decisions with money. This one looks like it's right up there!"

Another supporter, @fact_enthusiast, added: "Blocked us from signing Kvaradona [Khvicha Kvaratskhelia] by the way."

However, many fans also came to the support of the ex-Juventus man, with user @RClavity commenting: "If I was front row watching Luis Diaz and [Diogo] Jota play over me, I'd shoot myself."

Another user, @hancigitur, replied: "Slot needs a f**king wake up call, leaving this talent on the bench."

Liverpool enthusiast @k8_lfc wrote: "In reality he's living a nightmare... Desperate to play and deserves to play but baldy hates him for some reason."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 2024-25 season has been one to forget for Chiesa after he arrived for a cut-price £11 million fee from Juve last summer. Slot has refused to count on the Italian international; indeed, the 27-year-old has made only 10 appearances in all competitions, accumulating a paltry 371 minutes of action.

Slot has often dropped Chiesa from his matchday squads, with Anfield Watch journalist Peter Staunton revealing a few months ago that the Dutch manager was "not impressed" with Chiesa's "application and mentality."

He sat on the bench for the entirety of the 210 minutes against PSG across the two legs of the Champions League round of 16, with forwards Mo Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo all drawing blanks in the tie.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Liverpool are currently leading the Premier League and their triumph seems inevitable at this point. Should the Reds lift their first top-flight title since 2019, Chiesa risks not getting a winners' medal. League rules state that a player must make a minimum of five appearances to receive the medal — Chiesa only has three appearances to his name so far.

    WHAT NEXT FOR FEDERICO CHIESA?

The past few months have been rife with speculation surrounding Chiesa's future at Anfield. Reports from Italy have revealed that a return to Serie A could be on the cards. A summer departure seems to be the most likely outcome as Fiorentina, Atalanta, and Napoli expressed interest in signing Chiesa on loan in the January transfer window. In the meantime, it remains to be seen if Chiesa makes it into Slot's squad for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United on Sunday.
