Lionesses and Manchester United star Ella Toone has been told to improve in a key aspect of her game by England boss Sarina Wiegman.

    Toone was part of the side that fell to a 2-1 defeat to France in Euro 2025 qualification on Friday evening. The midfielder endured a frustrating evening, failing to impact the game for significant spells.

    However, Wiegman is not overly concerned. Toone had 10 goal contributions with United in the WSL and the England manager lavished praise on her tactical awareness on the pitch. However, she feels that Toone can still improve her defensive work rate when her teammates are chasing the ball.

  • WHAT WIEGMAN SAID

    Talking to ITV, Wiegman said: "I think she has developed very much. I think she’s in a good place. She’s becoming more and more aware of what she needs to do, but also the bigger picture. That’s nice about team sport. If you’re connected really well you can play better as a team. I think she can still improve. Defensively she can still improve. When we started working together to where we are now, I think she’s improved a lot. And I hope, a lot more to come."
