New club for Kalvin Phillips! Man City outcast handed chance to resurrect Premier League career with another season-long loan

Phillips' two years at Manchester City have not been as he would have expected when he made the switch in 2022 from Leeds United for a reported fee of £45 million ($58m). His two years at City have been blighted by injury, poor form and a reportedly rocky relationship with Pep Guardiola. The England international has now departed the eight-time Premier League champions on loan to Ipswich.

Despite having spent one-and-a-half seasons with Guardiola's side, Phillips has only made 31 appearances so far and only has one goal contribution to his name. City have been looking to move the midfielder away on a permanent deal to try and recoup their 2022 investment. However, they have now agreed to send him out on another loan after a disappointing stint with West Ham United last season.

After signing for Ipswich, Phillips said: "This is a day I’ve been waiting a number of weeks for now and I’m very happy to be here. I’ve had some great conversations with players I know here and also with the manager, who I have obviously heard a lot about, and I’m excited to be here and be part of his team, playing how he likes to play the game.

"The conversations with Kieran McKenna and Mark Ashton have been really good and I followed Ipswich’s season closely last year, so I know the journey the Club has been on and it’s a great story which I’m now excited to be a part of. I want to play as many games as possible, enjoy playing football again and help the team win as many games as possible in the Premier League."

Phillips has been training during pre-season with Manchester City and should be fit to play for Kieran McKenna's side this weekend in their Premier League opener against Liverpool on August 17, given it appears he was registered prior to the 12pm (BST) deadline.
