Gio Reyna suffers injury concern as Borussia Monchengladbach coach trying not to 'risk' USMNT man

  • Fresh start at Monchengladbach after Dortmund farewell

Once touted as the next big thing in Europe and for the USMNT, Reyna's career has been on a steep decline due to recurring fitness issues. After intense transfer speculation over the past few windows, the attacking midfielder bid farewell to Dortmund over the summer to join Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth €7 million.

Reyna's struggles: Disappointing debut followed by frustrating draw

Having missed the first two games as he was recovering, Reyna was handed a start in his debut game against Werder Bremen on September 14. While the USMNT playmaker showed some promise, his team were handed a brutal 4-0 defeat. Reyna was subbed off after 75 minutes on his debut, while he could only manage 10 minutes in last weekend's 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.

  • Reyna's injury misery continues

Reyna was missing from training on Wednesday and is now a big doubt for Saturday's Bundesliga clash against Eintracht Frankfurt. "With Gio, it's a case of thigh problems. We left him in the locker room so as not to risk anything," said Gladbach manager Eugen Polanski. "We hope he'll be available again in the next few days."

Reyna eyeing a place in USMNT's 2026 World Cup squad

Reyna will be hoping for an injury-free 2025-26 season. The 22-year-old is of the belief that he'll be selected for USMNT's squad for next year's World Cup on home soil, claiming earlier this month that he chose to join Monchengladbach to earn his way back into national contention.
