Gianluigi Donnarumma unhappy with PSG situation as Serie A return looms

Gianluigi Donnarumma is not pleased with his current situation at Paris Saint-Germain, according to L'Equipe (h/t Calciomercato). Donnarumma is believed to be unhappy with Luis Enrique's decision to drop him from the starting XI for the Champions League game against Bayern Munich in favour of Matvey Safonov. A return to Serie A could be on the cards for the ex-AC Milan goalkeeper, who wants to leave Parc des Princes.

Donnarumma’s benching against Lens before the November international break was seen as the coach resting the player, but his exclusion against Toulouse sparked tension with Enrique. His frustration grew after being left out of the lineup against Bayern Munich, especially following a costly mistake by teammate Safonov which led to Kim Min-jae's goal.

Lately, the Italian international has been put on the periphery, with the relationship between the player and Enrique reaching a breaking point following the loss to Bayern. This could have serious repercussions as far as Donnarumma's future in the French capital is concerned.

What's more, PSG and Donnarumma's agents were in discussions for a contract extension for the player. However, talks have broken down since the beginning of the year and Les Parisiens are at risk of losing the 25-year-old for free in 2026, when his contract expires.

That could be prevented if Donnarumma leaves the club next summer. With Enrique losing faith in Donnarumma and the Italy international getting frustrated due to losing his status as the undisputed No. 1 between the posts, a return to Serie A looks inevitable. At the moment, only Napoli and Inter look like the teams who could go after the shot stopper.

Antonio Conte's side are uncertain about Alex Meret's future, with the 27-year-old custodian's contract expiring at the end of the season. Meanwhile, the Nerazzurri are looking for a successor to the ageing Yann Sommer, who will turn 36 in December and has just a little over 18 months left on his contract.

PSG face a daunting task in the Champions League, as they have just four points from their first five group stage games. They face the danger of being eliminated from the group stage itself, as they are currently outside the top 24 berths on the table. Next up for them is a return to Ligue 1 action, where they will host Nantes on Saturday, November 30.
