Erling Haaland & Viktor Gyokeres made to wait? Barcelona plan big contract call with Robert Lewandowski that would impact future transfer plans

The 36-year-old is out of contract next summer but according to Sport, Barcelona are likely to activate a clause in his deal that will extend his stay by another year. The report adds they could even prolong his stay at the Catalan outfit until 2027.

This comes days after Barca were linked with Manchester City talisman Haaland, 24, and Sporting CP star Gyokeres, 26. But due to the La Liga team's much-publicised financial issues, signing these prolific strikers may be a bridge too far. However, if Lewandowski can keep up his incredible goalscoring rate, which has seen him score 20 goals in 18 games so far this season, Barca may not need to dip into the market for at least another year.

Sport adds that the Blaugrana are using Lewandowski's performances as a 'stopgap' as they look to save funds and recover from their ongoing 'economic crisis'. However, they are reportedly intent on finding a long-term successor for the Pole in the coming years.

Aside from contract speculation with Lewandowski and the club's potential transfer plans, Barca host Brest in their next Champions league game on Tuesday night. Hansi Flick's side will be looking to bounce back from throwing away a two-goal lead late on in their 2-2 draw away at Celta Vigo on Saturday.
