Who are the top earning American players in Major League Soccer? Goal breaks down the top 10

The MLS players union released its salary data last week, and the numbers showed some interesting trends. 

Three Americans were in the top 10 in the league in terms of total compensation, while a fourth landed in the top 25. 

Even among Americans Toronto FC dominated the list of high earners, but Sporting Kansas City and Orlando City each placed a pair of players on this list. 

Here's the rundown of the top 10 highest paid Americans in Major League Soccer.  

  • Michael Bradley Toronto FC

    #10 Michael Bradley, Toronto FC

    The U.S. national team captain and Toronto star is the highest-paid American in the league at $6.5 million per year. 
  • Jozy Altidore Toronto FC CONCACAF Champions League

    #9 Jozy Altidore, Toronto FC

    The former AZ standout returned to MLS to a big payday and will make $5 million in total compensation in 2018. 
  • Tim Howard Colorado Rapids

    #8 Tim Howard, Colorado Rapids

    The highest paid goalkeeper in the league is also the Colorado Rapids' highest earner at $2.5 million this season. 
  • Clint Dempsey Seattle Sounders MLS

    Dempsey took a cut in pay for the 2018 season but still ranks among the five best-paid American players at $1.7 million this season. 
  • Dom Dwyer Orlando City MLS 04082018

    Though he was born in the United Kingdom, the forward is a naturalized U.S. citizen and will earn $1.4 million in 2018. 
  • Alejandro Bedoya Philadelphia Union MLS 2018

    The U.S. national team midfielder came to MLS from Nantes in 2016 and will make $1.3 million in 2018. 
  • Sacha Kljestan MLS Orlando City 03172018

    Now on his third MLS team, and having spent five years playing for Anderlecht in Belgium, the midfielder is slated to earn $1.1 million this season.

    While being used primarily as a substitute this season, he is chasing the all-time MLS scoring mark and is set to make $800,000 in 2018. 
  • Matt Besler Sporting Kansas City MLS 2018

    The long-time MLS center-back is still a key performer for one of the best teams in the Western Conference and will make $783,250 this season. 
  • Graham Zusi Sporting Kansas City MLS 2018

    His days running the midfield may be over, but the former U.S. national team winger is still getting paid a pretty penny at $782,102 this season.
