Afcon 2019: Tunisia v Nigeria Player Ratings - Super Eagles struggle for bronze medal

10:26 EAT 18/07/2019
How did the Super Eagles fare individually in victory over Tunisia?

  • Francis Uzoho - Nigeria

    Francis Uzoho: 5/10

Precious little to do in a drab match which saw Tunisia falter time and again at the final pass. Came out quickly and spread himself well to close down the angle on Firat Chaouat's chance in the second half. Most importantly, he was a calming influence on the Nigerian backline.
  • Ola Aina, Nigeria

    Ola Aina: 4/10

Got forward to good effect early on, but was unable to sustain that pace for the rest of the game. Struggled for concentration quite often here, as though the lack of importance of the fixture dampened his output. Gave away the ball a heinous amount.
  • Taha Yassine, William Troost-Ekong -Tunisia vs. Nigeria

    William Troost-Ekong: 5/10

Largely solid showing on the part of the Udinese man. Concerns remain over his composure on the ball, but he got himself in the way of the ball often enough. It's effective, if nothing else.
  • Yassine Khenissi, Kenneth Omeruo – Tunisia vs. Nigeria

    Kenneth Omeruo: 5.5/10

His discomfort on his weaker foot notwithstanding, he showed bravery on the ball to break past the first line of pressure on a few occasions. Was not dominated at any point, and got the team going with some good long passes.
  • Jamilu Collins, Mohamed Drager –Tunisia vs. Nigeria

    Jamilu Collins: 5/10

Showed a lot more going forward in this game than in any other he featured in at Afcon. His acceleration and low cross culminated in the game's only goal, and he was an outlet on the left. Suffered a little defensively when caught one-on-one with Wahbi Khazri, but he won't be the last.
  • Ellyes Joris Skhiri, Wilfred Ndidi - Tunisia vs. Nigeria

    Wilfred Ndidi: 4.5/10

Visibly tired, and could maybe have done with a breather for this one. As such, the quality of his work suffered somewhat. Constantly involved, but his limitations in terms of his distribution are more apparent every day. Should have done better with a presentable shooting opportunity in the first half.
  • Oghenekaro Etebo, Wahbi Khazri - Tunisia vs. Nigeria

    Oghenekaro Etebo: 4/10

One might simply repeat the same concerns regarding Ndidi. Less involved in the development of the game, and even his set-piece delivery left a lot to be desired. Was also not effective pressuring the ball deep in the opponent's half.
  • Alex Iwobi, Mohamed Drager - Tunisia vs. Nigeria

    Alex Iwobi: 5.5/10

Always positive, almost always made the right decision to help the team's transition, even though his execution did not always come off. Another who might have benefitted from sitting out this match, as his performance level dropped quite noticeably late on.
  • Samuel Chukwueze - Nigeria vs. South Africa

    Samuel Chukwueze: 5/10

Came close to scoring only his second international goal for Nigeria with a beautiful curling effort, and then set up Victor Osimhen with a reverse pass. Took up some interesting positions when infield, but does not quite have the decision-making just yet. That will come. Also needed to be more conscious when tracking back.
  • Ahmed Musa, Anice Badri – Tunisia vs. Nigeria

    Ahmed Musa: 3/10

Largely uninvolved, which is perhaps an apt way of capping off a disappointing tournament. Worked back often to protect his full-back, but that was about it. Probably should have been pulled earlier than he was.
  • Odion Ighalo of Nigeria celebrates a goal during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Finals, 3rd and 4th place match

    Odion Ighalo: 5/10

Included here simply for the Golden Boot, and he got what he wanted. Did little else; indeed, that was his only shot the entire game. Only lasted 45 minutes.
  • Moses Simon, Gernot Rohr

    Moses Simon: N/A

Did not feature long enough for a proper rating.
  • Victor Osimhen

    Victor Osimhen: 4/10

Looked a little raw after coming on at the break. Had a shot which was going wide anyway saved, and shot from a tight angle when he might have displayed greater composure.
  • Samuel Kalu - Nigeria

    Samuel Kalu: N/A

Did not feature long enough for a proper rating.
