Samuel Chukwueze - Nigeria vs. South Africa
It was a closely fought contest as Nigeria edged out Bafana in the quarter-finals, but what do the numbers say?

  • Samuel Chukwueze Nigeria South Africa

    Nigeria threaten more

Nigeria were certainly up for the game as they threatened the Bafana goal a lot more.

The Super Eagles had eight shots on goal, of which four were on target.

On the other hand, Bafana had four shots on goal with two being on target.

    Bafana better passes

Not only did Bafana dominate the possession statistics with 60.8% but they also enjoyed a better passing success.

Of the 487 passes made by Stuart Baxter's men, Bafana completed 81.5%, this was a stark contrast to Nigeria, who only completed 72.2% of their passes.

  • Wilfred Ndidi and Bongani Zungu - Nigeria vs. South Africa

    A sloppy game

Possession was turned over constantly by both teams, making for a sloppy game at times.

Bafana lost the ball 135 times while Nigeria lost 126.

Super Eagles up for the challenge

Nigeria certainly learned a lot from Bafana's Round of 16 win over Egypt.

They closed down spaces and when Bafana had possession they were quick to break down play with a successful tackle.

Out of the 13 tackles made by Nigeria, they were successful 69% of the time.

Bafana could only manage a tackle success of 56%.

  • Nigeria v South Africa July 2019 - Daniel Akpeyi

Akpeyi not tested but his passing a concern

Despite all that was said about Nigeria's goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi's frailties before the game, Bafana failed to test him as he made just a solitary save.

However, while he was not really tested, his distribution will be a cause for concern having made 21 unsuccessful passes - more than any other player on the field.

  • Nigeria v South Africa July 2019 - Kamohelo Mokotjo

    Mokotjo a passing gem

No player completed more successful passes on the night than Kamohelo Mokotjo.

He was influential in Bafana's midfield, not only did he complete 100% of his dribbles but he also had more touches than any other player - 70.

  • Nigeria v South Africa July 2019 - Alex Iwobi and Bongani Zungu

    Nigeria's dangerous trio

When it came to chance creation, Nigeria were in a league of their own.

The trio of Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon, who came on in the second half, were the most dangerous players on the pitch.

The trio all created two chances each.
