Indian Super League: Stiven Mendoza wins 'Hero of the League' award

The Chennaiyin front man walked away with two awards to his credit after his side beat FC Goa to win the Indian Super League (ISL) title.

Chennaiyin FC striker John Stiven Mendoza picked up the 'Hero of the League' award as well as the Golden Boot after the Machans defeated FC Goa 3-2 in the Indian Super League (ISL) final in Fatorda on Sunday.

The Colombian won two penalties and scored a last-gasp winner in stoppage time to land Chennaiyin FC the title after they narrowly missed out on a place in the final last season.

Mendoza finished the tournament as the top scorer with 13 goals to his name with Atletico de Kolkata's Iain Hume proving to be his closest competitor with 11 strikes. Having provided three assists over the course of the season and being widely regarded as the most feared attacker in the league, it's no surprise that the 23-year-old was handed the award for best player as well.

While Hume was second best in the goal scoring charts, he was named the Fittest Player of the league.

Chennaiyin's Edel Bete who kept six clean sheets this season was awarded the Golden Glove while team-mate Jeje Lalpekhlua was named the league's Emerging Player.

Meanwhile, Mumbai City FC who finished sixth in the table won the Fair Play award with Brandon Fernandes on hand to receive it.
