Nicolas Anelka will don the dual role of marquee player-cum-manager for Mumbai City FC in the second edition of the Indian Super League (ISL).
This is Anelka’s second stint in a dual role of player-manager with the first being back in 2012 with Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.
The club had already retained the player for the second edition of the ISL, as well as confirming he would be the marquee player in the team, about a month ago.
Mumbai City FC co-owner Ranbir Kapoor said, “I'm thrilled to have Nicolas as our marquee player-cum-manager. Last year, he impressed us all with his tactical knowledge and excellent motivational skills. It's a role both parties have been discussing for a couple of months and it's been a great start. We will provide Nicolas all the support required to try and win the league this year.”
Anelka expressed his excitement at the development and hopes that they can better their performance from last season wherein they finished seventh on the table.
“I would like to say thank you to the Mumbai City FC staff for giving me the opportunity to coach the club. We are all very excited to start this new season. I'm personally very eager to take on this new role for the club and put a strong competitive team on the pitch! See you very soon," said Anelka.
The former Paris Saint-Germain man has honed his skills with top brass clubs including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Juventus among others.
Before his stint in ISL last season, the Anelka had turned up for West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League where he had scored twice in 12 appearances for the Baggies.
The striker was also an integral part of the French national team for a long 12 years, as he scored 14 goals in 69 appearances for the Les Bleus.
