Sushanth Mathew, the Indian medio who scored an absolute beauty against Chennaiyin FC that helped Kerala Blasters seal important 3-0 victory in the first leg of a semi-final in the Indian Super League (ISL), has elucidated that he has been inundated with congratulatory messages ever since.
Bearing down on goal, from the right side, with three defenders around him, Mathew took an amazing punt by switching the ball over to his left foot and smashing a curling ball from 30 yards out past a diving Gennaro Bracigliano, into the far right top corner. It sparked wild celebrations from the spectators and the Blasters bench, who were rapturous at seeing a Kerala native score a wonderful goal in his bastion.
“Sachin told me ‘It was a beautiful goal’ and ‘See you in Mumbai for the final’. But, what I cherish more is hearing from I. M. Vijayan, who has plenty of experience in football,” revealed an emotional Mathew, speaking to The New Indian Express, who also added, “It has been unbelievable.”
The 33 year-old also revealed that players such as Atletico de Kolkata’s Mohammad Rafi and TP Rehenesh of NorthEast United, personally rang him up to congratulate him of a superb finish. He was also pleased to say Jo Paul Anchery too congratulated him personally.
Speaking about the goal itself, after he was set up with a neat little pass by the efficient Iain Hume, Sushant revealed, “I think Alessandro Nesta and Mikael Silvestre expected me to go to the corner flag, but then I caught them by surprise by running at them,” elucidated Sushant.
He also jovially claimed that he imitated a certain world superstar whilst executing the stunner explaining, “I still had to shift the ball to my stronger foot and then pulled off the ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ trick.”
Remembering the duty he was asked to perform whilst being introduced onto the pitch as a substitute, Sushant exclaimed, “I was asked no to give away possession cheaply, but it was always a dream to score in front of the Kerala crowd.”
Finally the former Mahindra United star concluded by stating, “We will once again try to play to our best at Chennai and then go on to win the trophy at Mumbai.”
