FC Goa’s rise as coincided with Zico altering his attacking frontline with Romeo Fernandes playing an important role. The youngster is the top scorer amongst the Indian players plying their trade in the Indian Super League (ISL).
Since being roped in by Armando Colaco who had billed him as one of the most promising youngsters in the country, he made 13 appearances in his second season in the I-League.
However, a change of guard at the helm of Dempo SC at the start of last season and Romeo wasn’t afforded as many chances by Arthur Papas who brought in a host of Pailan Arrows players to the Goan club.
“What we can see from Romeo in the matches is the result of his practice and efforts. It is the fruit of his hard work. I keep on guiding him and give him confidence so that he can perform as per his capabilities,” said Zico.
The last game between FC Goa and Atletico de Kolkata was an ill-tempered affair with Antonio Habas, coach of the Kolkata outfit, Fikru Tefera and Robert Pires being suspended for two games each eventually and also having to shell out a fine.
“This will be a different game as situation is different for the two teams. Atletico are a very good team. Revenge has no place. Every game is history for us. We just want to look at what lies ahead. That’s how our approach is,” he mentioned.
Atletico de Kolkata needs to win their final league fixture against the Goans to qualify for the semis. However, their going wouldn’t be easy with Zico promising that his side will look to continue their winning run.
“It is the merit of the team. No one defends alone or attacks alone. It has been a total team effort. Our aim is to finish on top of the table. I always play to win and we will try and get one more victory, “ he stated.
