Uefa president Michel Platini brings back a new format of the old Ballon d'Or as journalists get to vote for the European Footballer of the Year
Uefa has announced the launch of a new award that has all the markings of the old Ballon d'Or which in 2010 merged with the Fifa World Player of the Year gong.

But Uefa chief Michel Platini wants a European award in its own right, and has now decided to launch the Uefa Best Player in Europe accolode which takes the place of the old Ballon d'Or.

European football's governing body has renewed its partnership with European Sports Media where a panel of 53 top sports journalists representing Uefa will decide who wins the award.

The three nominees for the award will be announced on July 25, and the winner will be revealed a month later during the Champions League group stage draw.
