Churchill fullback Naoba Singh has emerged as one of India's most promising defenders in recent times, excelling at right back for the defending I-League champions. On the back of his performances for the club, as well as for junior national teams, Singh was drafted into the squad for the upcoming SAFF Cup.
Speaking to Goal.com, the ever-smiling 21-year old expressed his happiness on being selected. "I'm really happy that I made it to the squad, and am looking forward to the tournament"
However, Singh was aware that the team needed to put in a lot of effort at the tournament. He said, "The squad has been selected, and now it's up to us to make sure we do well. We have to work hard for each other, and do the job for our country."
A few days ago it was announced that JCT coach would be taking over as coach of the national U-23 side, a decision that the fullback welcomes, even though he admits he doesn't know him too well.
"I've met him a few times in the past, but I've never played under him, so this will be a new experience. However, I'm really happy with the decision, as we all know that he works really well with young players, like he has done at JCT", added the Manipuri defender.
Meanwhile, in the I-League, Singh continues to perform for Churchill, as he provided a crucial assist in Churchill's previous match against Air India for Kalu to score Churchill's first goal.
"It was a good game, and Air India were playing well on the day. They had their chances, but we could have scored even more. We knew we had to win, after drawing the previous matches, and we had that energy about us."
On his assist for Kalu's first goal, Singh said, "I connected well with the cross, and Kalu scored, so I was really happy. More so because I haven't got an assist for the last three or four games (Laughs)!"
The Tata Football Academy graduate is also versatile, in the sense that he can play further up the pitch in a right winger's role as well, something he has done well in the past. Singh will next feature for Churchill against top-of-the-table Dempo on 8th November.
