The Indian national U17 team, scheduled to participate in the U17 World Cup in India in 2017, were beaten by the United States-based Orlando City U17s by a 1-0 scoreline. The match was played at the Estádio Independência, in Belo Horizonte, on Monday, 12th, December 2016.
Orlando City U17s are the academy side of Major League Soccer (MLS) participating Orlando City SC.
The Colts have travelled to Brazil where they are contesting the Atletico Paranaense U-17 International Tournament which will feature three others beside themselves viz. Orlando SC U17s, the Uruguayan National U17s and the home side, the Atletico Paranaense U17s.
Beginning on the front foot, the fledglings had their first chance to open their account when Ninthoi Meetei stole a charge on the Purples' defenders, but his effort was calmly saved by the opposition goalkeeper. That was the only real chance of note to fall to the team from the Subcontinent.
The first half ended goalless.
However, two minutes into the second half, the Lions found the back of the net after a swift counter-attack. Nicolai Adam, the coach of the young fledglings, used all four of his substitutes, including a surprise goalkeeping change, yet the Indians were unable to breach the opposition defense.
In the dying embers of the game, the young Blue Tigers earned as many as four corners successively, none of which could be converted. The Florida-based side registered their opening win of the tournament thus.
The Indians will now face Atletico Paranaense on Tuesday, 13th December, at 11.30 PM IST.
