Asian Games: India Make It To The Last 16 After Beating Singapore 4-1

The India U-23 team moved into the last 16 of the 2010 Asian Games after thrashing Singapore 4-1 in a Group D encounter at the Huadu stadium in Guangzhou, China, on Thursday.

Sheikh Jewel Raja, Balwant Singh, K Singh and Manish Maithani were the four players to get their names on the scoresheet for the Indian colts.  Luo Zhenlun scored the only goal for Singapore.

After losing their first two matches in the group, India’s only hope of progressing to the next round was by finishing as one of the four best third placed teams.

They finish third in Group D with three points from as many games and a goal difference of 0. Qatar win the group after beating Kuwait 2-0 in the other match.

Three groups are still to be completed, but this win guarantees India's qualification to the round of 16 as they are assured of finishing at least above Uzbekistan and Maldives among the six third placed teams.

The first half was in favour of the Indian side with Sheikh Jewel Raja giving them the lead in the 13th minute from a direct freekick.

Balwant Singh scored the all important second goal in the 62nd minute while Jibon Singh added the third five minutes later as he rounded off a fine team move.

Mohun Bagan midfielder Manish Maithani made it 4-0 in the 75th minute by scoring with a fine long range strike.

The Indian colts had conceded late goals in both their previous two matches and they did the same in this tie too as Singapore’s Luo Zhelun bagged a consolation in the 83rd minute.
