India have played a few friendlies in the Mediterranean nation against primarily third division sides with the sole exception of Atletico CP who were a division higher. In the next two days, India shall face two second division teams in Casa PIA AC and Real Massama SC.
The Sikkimese Sniper who had to miss the major chunk of training and return to India due to thyroid problems believes that the build-up for the mega event in Qatar has been going well.
“It’s a preparation period for the 2011 Asian Cup and it’s going off pretty well. Right now, we are playing third division sides and it’s a good start with the results we’ve got.
“Obviously, we shall slowly start playing the second and then the first division sides and by the time we finish our preparation, we will be in a better position by January to play in the 2011 Asian Cup,” said the India skipper.
The whole Indian contingent has performed well in the friendly matches but Bhaichung reserved his praise for former Mahindra United striker Mohammed Rafi for the three goals he has scored so far.
“Rafi is a great player and is also doing well for the national team now after an exceptional season in the I-League,” said Bhaichung.
