Mohun Bagan succumbed under a bit of pressure as they could only manage a 0-0 draw against Peerless, knowing that only a win would get them level on points with East Bengal, who are trying to win an unprecedented 7th league title in a row.
There was a bit of a controversy even before the match began when Mohun Bagan filed an objection against three players on Peerless’ starting eleven, claiming that their names weren’t there on the original team sheet submitted by the club. But the objections were soon quashed away and Peerless submitted a new team sheet.
New signing Darryl Duffy was at the heart of most of what was good about Mohun Bagan, but the Scotsman was lacking clear cut chances to put the game to bed. A lack of service into Duffy proved costly as Peerless were able to generate counter-attacks of their own.
In the second half, the Mariners brought Daniel Bidemi on for Tapan Maity to partner Duffy up front, but Bagan still couldn’t create enough chances. Peerless had the best chance of the game when Arghya hit the post.
This finally prompted Mohun Bagan into action and the Mariners got into their usual rhythm. Prabir Das came closest to scoring from Azharuddin Mallick’s pass, but goalkeeper Shankar Parried wide.
Bagan then mounted pressure with chance after chance, but Peerless held on for a well-deserved draw against the Kolkata giants. Peerless’ goalkeeper, Shankar Roy was awarded Man of the Match.
Mohun Bagan now sit on 13 points in the standings of the Calcutta Football League, just 2 points behind East Bengal who sit pretty at the top. Mohammedan Sporting Club closely follow the two leaders on 12 points after 5 games, with Peerless fourth with 8 points.
The starting line-ups were as follows:
