English side Crystal Palace's U19 team, currently participating in the 120th edition of the Indian Football Association's (IFA) Shield, left Salgaocar FC in tatters as they won their Group A tie by a 4-1 margin at the Barasat stadium in Kolkata, on Tuesday 23rd February.
This was Palace's opening bow in the tournament's group stages while Salgaocar have already played three games, with the former now in second position as the latter flounder in fourth in the group.
The Eagles got off to the best possible start as Levi Lumeka earned his team the lead as early as the 12th minute. The away side had settled far better into the game and in the 27th minute, doubled their lead. Francis Baptiste pulled the trigger to enusre his team's dominance had the appropriate results.
The teams went into the break, with Salgaocar in the deficit as the British side looked very comfortable.
The Greens tried to prod their way into the game in the second half, but were soon three goals down when Kian Flanagan's 56th minute minute effort found the back of the net.
Tristaw Falcao earned some respect for his team on the scoreline in the 72nd minute, as the Greens cut the gap to just two goals, however, the vastly superior Palace would have the final say on the scoreboard's reading. Lumeka, the scorer of his team's first, netted another in the 86th minute to make the scoreline a commendable 4-1 in favour of the away side.
That's how the game ended, with Palace bouncing straight into second position in the group, behind the Tata Football Academy (TFA), who have played three games.
February 24th's encounter's will see the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) Elite Academy take on the Malaysian side Frenz United at 4.30 PM IST.
