The Indian U17 team ended their journey of the Atletico Paranaense U17 International Tournament on a high by defeating Orlando City SC 2-1 in the third position play-off on Sunday. The victory was India's first of the tournament.
Amarjit Singh Kiyam and Shubham Sarangi registered their names on the score sheet, both scoring in the first half of the match. Amarjit capitalized from the penalty's spot, whereas Sarangi scored from a header to provide the second goal for the Blue Colts.
The first goal of the tie was seen within three minutes of kick-off. The USA-based team found the net following a tap-in from their player off a cross from the left wing.
India responded well to Orlando's opener after earning a penalty kick. They were given a free-kick near the edge of the box which saw Sanjeev Stalin lay it off for Boris Singh Thangjam. Boris passed it on to an advancing Shubham who was brought down inside the box by the opponent's defender. Skipper Amarjit stepped and levelled the score.
Later, Shubham scored the winner for the visiting team. Sanjeev delivered a pass from a short corner to Amarjit who lofted it into the penalty box. Shubham headed the ball in and put the Nicolai Adam-coached side in the ascendancy.
The Lions tried hard to pull out an equalizer by incorporating several strategies in the dying moments of the match, but it all went in vain as the game ended 2-1 in the favour of India.
The victory meant that India ended their journey on the third spot, behind the host side Atletico Paranaense and the Uruguayan National Team.
