A Look At The Bayern Munich Players Who Are Traveling To India - Midfielders And Forwards

Goal.com introduces the traveling midfielders and forwards of the Bayern Munich squad who are to participate in the exhibition tie against India...
Goal.com takes you through the second part of the 24 member Bayern Munich team that will play against India on January 10. Here we focus on the midfielders and the strikers the Bavarian outfit will use:

Franck
RIBERY

Age: 28 yrs
Birthplace: Boulogne-sur-Mer, France
Height: 5 ft 7 in
Position: Winger

Bayern

Strengths: Every full back in the world is scared to cross paths with him. Dribbling, passing, chipping, he can do everything imaginable and unimaginable to get past people. Pace and trickery in abundance, and easily one of the best attacking wingers today.

Weakness: Known to be error prone, when he has an off day, which includes missing the easiest of chances. Also he doesn’t back track to help out his full back, and can lose possession having received a pass.

Arjen
ROBBEN

Age: 29 yrs
Birthplace: Bedum, Netherlands
Height: 6 ft 0 in
Position: Winger

Bayern

Strengths: In the 2009-2010 season, Arjen Robben had a goal or an assist in every Champions League game he played for Bayern prior to the final against Inter Milan. The Flying Dutchman cuts in from the right wing like very few can, and arguably has the best left foot in the world after Lionel Messi. The skill and technique he possesses, can be matched by very few as demonstrated in the goal which eliminated  Manchester United from the European competition two seasons ago.

Weakness: Even in the peak of his powers a lot of people complained that he was too selfish, and despite all the wonder goals scored, he should have passed the ball to team-mates more often. He has also been accused of being a 'diver'.

Toni
KROOS

Age: 22 yrs
Birthplace: Griefswald, East Germany
Height: 6 ft 0 in
Position: Attacking Midfielder/Winger

Bayern

Strengths: After his loan return from Bayer Leverkusen, Kroos’ inclusion was doubted by many last season. But this year, he has completed a remarkable turnaround, as one of the most consistent players in the Bundesliga. His positioning belies his age, and always seems to pick out players with his pass. He can come in handy with long range efforts when required, and yet produce short cute passes.

Weakness: At times he does return to the patch of inconsistency that defined him earlier.

Bastian
SCHWEINSTEIGER

Age: 29 yrs
Birthplace: Kolbermoor, West Germany
Height: 6 ft 0 in
Position: Central Midfielder

Bayern

Strengths: The engine room controller. He sprays the ball well enough to be compared to Xavi and Iniesta, and yet produces the crunch to impress Beckenbauer himself. A figure of authority in central midfield, his absence was signified as the same team which kept so many clean sheets earlier this season, was guilty of letting in late goals after his collarbone injury in a match against Napoli.

Weakness: He does tend to flop when his team needs him the most.

Thomas
MULLER

Age: 22 yrs
Birthplace: Weilheim, West Germany
Height: 6 ft 1 in
Position: Attacking midfielder/Winger

Bayern

Strengths: Often compared to his more accomplished namesake, Thomas is an attacking midfielder cum striker who can dance around the wing and shift in to provide the assists. Also capable of playing in the hole behind the striker, the young Golden Ball recipient(for 5 goals and 5 assists in South Africa 2010) can dribble with ease quite well. He has great composure in the box.

Weakness: Loses possession too often and misplaces his pass at times.

Mario
GOMEZ

Age: 26 yrs
Birthplace: Riedlingen, West Germany
Height: 6 ft 2 in
Position: Striker

Bayern

Strengths: The current hot property around Bavaria. After taking his time to settle in, Mario Gomez has scored 24 goals this season thus far. And while not all of them might be a visual treat, it just shows that his poaching instincts are almost what you dream to be as he can put the ball in the net, almost too easily because of his advanced reading. Also good at holding up play, allowing the firing midfield to get forward at will.

Weakness: Can miss sitters like no one else can. None will forget his 2 inch miss from Euro 2008, and his penalty miss against Napoli was pedestrian.

Ivica
OLIC

Age: 32 yrs
Birthplace: Davor, SFR Yugoslavia
Height: 6 ft 0 in
Position: Forward

Bayern

Strengths: Can work and run, and work and run, for the entire of 90 minutes. Those who say Dirk Kuyt is the best work horse striker, can easily reconsider their choice after looking at Olic. Around the wings, in midfield, even running back to his own side of the field very few can give so much in 90 minutes than him. And this exceptional work ethic more often than not does pay off, as he gets in the crucial goals.

Weakness: For all his energy, you just want to scream out for a bit more skill to complement it. Then you just never know what he could have been. Also a bit in the wilderness right now, thanks to the overpowering Gomez, and it shows as he has become rusty in the playing time he’s got.

Takashi
USAMI

Age: 19 yrs
Birthplace:
Nagaokakyō, Kyoto, Japan
Height: 5 ft 10 in
Position: Midfielder/Forward

Bayern

Strengths: Signed on loan from Gamba Osaka, the young Japanese is a treat to watch. Usually deployed on the left wing, he can smoothly drift in to provide a consistent goal scoring option. Can be effective behind the striker too. Dribbles very well, calm and composed in his shot taking and goes for quality/ not for power.

Weakness: Despite his potential, he is plagued by inconsistency and often unnoticed when not at his best. Also, reports suggest that he can do well in the physical aspect as he hasn’t fully adapted to that department of European football.
Luiz
GUSTAVO

Age: 24 yrs
Birthplace:
Pindamonhangaba, Brazil

Height: 6 ft 4 in
Position: Defensive Midfielder

Bayern

Strengths: Signed from Hoffenheim back in January last year, Gustavo settled in immediately. He gained confidence after being solid in midfield alongside
Schweinsteiger and controlling possession well.

Weakness: He doesn’t help much in regaining possession which is something you would ask from your defensive midfielder. Also unnecessarily blasts out from long range without much accuracy. Not too good at crossing, and commits fouls a bit too often.
Emre
CAN

Age: 17 yrs
Birthplace:
Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Height: 6 ft 1 in
Position: Defender/Midfielder

Bayern

Strengths: Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness said of Emre that he is “the midfielder of the future and a jewel for Bayern Munich". That says it all, doesn’t it?

Weakness: He hasn’t yet featured in the Bundesliga as yet and it would be unfair to look at him with a critical eye.
Anatoliy
TYMOSHCHUK

Age: 32 yrs
Birthplace:
Lutsk, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union
Height: 5 ft 11 12 in
Position: Defensive Midfielder

Bayern

Strengths: The Ukranian captain is one of the most underrated defensive midfielders, as he can take most of the dirty load upon himself. Solid in tackling, wins back balls, passes accurately, and also scores with the occasional screamer. You just hoped he would be in a team where he could display his talents too often.

Weakness: Has lost a lot of his speed. Also can come in a bit too hard with his tackles, causing needless fouls.
David
ALABA

Age: 19 yrs
Birthplace:
Vienna, Austria
Height: 5 ft 9 in
Position:
Left Midfielder

Bayern

Strengths: When you are the Austrian Player of the Year at only 19 years, there must be a good number of reasons. Alaba has a great first touch, is neat
in his passing, and has very good pace on him. A combination of wonderful technique and the determination to work quite hard, he surely has the qualities to be a future sensation.

Weakness: His marking is not that good and is probably the only thing that stops him from being a complete central midfielder.
Nils
PETERSON

Age: 23 yrs
Birthplace:
Wernigerode, East Germany
Height: 6 ft 2 in
Position:
Forward

Bayern

Strengths: A typical poacher very much in the mould of Mario Gomez, Peterson has a very good sense of anticipation, can pick up lose balls in the box and has fantastic aerial ability. Attributes you would expect from a player who has scored 25 goals in 33 games for Bundesliga 2 team Energie Cottbus.

Weakness: Can do better with improved ground technique. That’s probably all you could point at from whatever this youngster has shown.
