Milan are working on a move to bring in former striker Marco Van Basten as coach, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Leonardo is expected to leave the club at the end of the season after admitting he has a rocky relationship with Silvio Berlusconi.
Another trophyless season has not gone down well within the club's board, and Berlusconi has given the mandate to search for a new coach.
And Van Basten has been added to the hit-list which includes Mauro Tassotti, Filippo Galli, former Cagliari coach Massimiliano Allegri and ex-Milan defender Frank Rijkaard.
Van Basten was heavily linked with the Rossoneri last year when he quit his post at Ajax, but the club appointed in-house and Leonardo stepped up to the plate following Carlo Ancelotti's departure.
But a poor season that is closing without a trophy has led to Berlusconi pointing towards change. Last week the club patron appeared to open the door to Leonardo's farewell when he reportedly admitted that he was looking for a new coach.
His alleged claims were later denied by CEO Adriano Galliani.
