1 – 0

1 – 1

Dewan (57’)

Mohammedan Sporting caused a huge upset yesterday when the second division giants were knocked out of contention after being held to a 1-1 draw by Malabar United at the KSFA Stadium, Bangalore.

Malabar United took the lead early on after Enyinnaya Loveday slotted past Mohammedan in the 8th minute. Nilendra Dewan though managed to pull one back for the Kolkata side in the 57th minute.

The game though could have been a lot different had Malabar really taken their chances. They enjoyed a better ball possession and were swift in their attacking plays but their finishing just wasn’t up to the mark. Mohammedan after being a goal down did put up a fight and came close in the 41st minute when Dipendu Biswas’ shot was blocked by Malabar stopper Pramod. Malabar nearly doubled their lead just before half time when Jacken Sebastian’s beautiful right shot hit the woodwork. At half time, Malabar lead 1-0.

The second half began with a much more attacking Mohammedan who within 10 minutes of the re-start equalized when Nilendra headed home a Satyajit Bose cross from the right in the 57th minute. Malabar’s Asif K then squandered a chance to give his side the lead again when his side were awarded a penalty after Amrit Pal Singh was caught handling the ball in the 80th minute. It was down to Asif to get his side 3 points but he only managed to hit the crossbar.

The game ended at that with the final score at 1-1. Both sides’ table standings remain the same now with Mohammedan on 4th and Malabar United on 5th.
