Sporting Clube de Goa gaffer Mateus Costa was left ruing missed chances in the second half of an enticing Federation Cup semi-final encounter, with I-League champions Bengaluru FC, a tie which they conceded 3-0. Last year’s finalists of the Cup, thus bowed out of the 36th edition of the tourney mustering little fight.
“They (Bengaluru) played better. I think we were better in the second half but we missed a lot of chances,” revealed a sombre Mateus, in the post match conference.
Asked if the Blues’ defense, was impenetrable despite the Flaming Oranje having a stellar second half, wherein they hit the post through Anthony Wolfe, the coach revealed, “In the first half, they were a better side. However, in the second half definitely we were the better team. We tried a lot of things and a lot was happening for us. But the goal didn’t come for us as their defense was very good."
Being a new recruit into the Sporting Clube de Goa set up, the coach revealed, “I have just joined and so has my assistant manager. We are looking forward to building a good team. We have to do the homework in the areas we lack in and fine tune the players. We were found wanting on both wings in defense and attack.”
Praising Bengaluru’s defense and midfield, he opined, “Of course, this (Bengaluru) defense is very good. And their central defensive player (Joshua Walker) is very good.”
Asked who he fancied to win the 36th Federation cup, he replied, “Dempo's attacking side is very good, they're fast and quick, while Bengaluru's defense is well organized. So it is a 50-50.”
Finally, asked as to what the Flaming Oranje’s failings were in this game, Costa briskly replied, “We have to work on our wings in both attack and defense with the I-League fast approaching.”
