Arguments over a football match flashed past boiling point and exacerbated into an all-out brawl in the northern Kolkata residential arrondissement of Manicktala, as security personnel were roped into control and temper the situation on the eve of Independence Day, 2016.
The fight is said to have ignited over the hosting of a football tie, supposedly organized by politicians of the ruling party - the Trinamool Congress (TMC) on the nation's 70th Independence Day. The combat was between people of two different localities in the same region- and last two days.
Scores of persons were left injured when dissenters of two groups clashed across a railway track, which is reported to have left three police officers needing medical attention as well. The personnel involved in suppressing the inflammation belonged to the Kolkata Police, the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and the Railway Police Force (RPF).
A total of 28 persons have been taken into custody, with them having partaken in stone pelting alongside throwing of acid bottles. Railway commuters weren't spared either as, taking cognizance of the situation, the trains heading through the region were delayed by up to 30 minutes.
The incident occurred on the eve of the 36th anniversary of one of Indian football's darkest days, when scores of match going supporters at a tie between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal lost their lives
