Churchill down Laxmi Prasad in a close tie

The reigning Federation Cup winners defeated the league leaders on Sunday and move to the sixth spot…

Churchill Brothers SC registered a 2-1 victory over Tuff Laxmi Prasad in a round seven game of the Goa Pro League (GPL) held at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa.

Goals from Sanjay Balmuchu and Manjit Singh were enough to seal the three points while ND Opara pulled one back for Laxmi Prasad.

The first half was listless with neither side able to create chances though it was Laxmi Prasad who saw more of the ball.

The only goal scoring opportunity came in the 37th minute when Mackroy Peixoto crossed for Manuel Fernandes with goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh doing enough to thwart the danger. Marcus Mascarenhas who was lurking around too failed to capitalize.

Just two minutes after the break and Churchill took the lead through Balmuchu. A Pankaj Sona corner saw Manjit Singh lash at it with the ball deflecting off a defender only as far as Odafa Okolie. The Nigeria’s attempt was kept out by the rival custodian but the Churchill centre-back was on hand to slot the ball in.

However, Laxmi Prasad found their way back when Mascarenhas’ bicycle-kick came off the crossbar only for Opara to slam home on the rebound.

But Churchill once again took the lead with Manjit Singh doing well to sneak behind their defense and tapping it in.

Laxmi Prasad looked determined to claw their way back once again but the Churchill rearguard kept it tight at the back.

Churchill Brothers are sixth on the table with 10 points while Laxmi Prasad are still leading at the top with 13 points from seven games.
