The Goa Pro League (GPL) organised by the Goa Football Association (GFA), on Tuesday, threw up one of its most exciting matches this playing season with Dempo SC outsmarting Churchill Brothers by a score line that read 4-2. What's surprising here is that all the goals came in the second half at the Duler stadium, Mapusa.
A noticeable miss, Churchill started the game without punter Odafa Okolie in the lineup on account of an injury to the ankle.
The Eagles started the brighter with them going all out to ensure the lead in light of the opposition's weakness. Whilst they dominated possession, they couldn't come up with a meaningful chance to take the lead in the first half.
The story continued into the second half with Nicolau Borges and Tolgay Ozbey squandering multiple gilt edged chances. Dempo's substitute Uttam Rai then had a moment of brilliance after his fantastic dribble helped him outfox Elvis Barreto which him gave him room to slot coolly into the bottom corner in the 63rd minute.
The Red Machines weren't to be denied an equaliser though, as Mahesh Gawli, centre back for Dempo, had an 'Oops' moment by scoring an own goal. Things got worse still for Mauricio Afonso' side as Manjit Singh, helped by a clever chipped finish past Dempo custodian Bruno Colaco, put Churchill ahead 2-1 on the day.
Celebrations were muted immediately however, as Ozbey put Dempo back on level terms, within a minute to be precise, courtesy of a poacher's finish. Then, in the 79th minute, the comeback was complete for Dempo, as Joy Ferrao headed in a cross from Borges. Australian Ozbey secured his second goal before the 90th minute as he converted a Myron Fernandes assist to make it 4-2 on the day.
The only dampener on Dempo's celebrations was sending off of Ozbey with just a minute remaining on the clock. The win helped Dempo secure fourth position in the GPL table, whilst Churchill Brothers are seventh albeit with the same number of points as Dempo, 10. Churchill however have a game in hand.
