Pune FC have signed Japanese midfielder Ryuji Sueoka and Brazilian defender Luciano Sabrosa for the upcoming 2014-15 I-League season, the club confirmed on Thursday.
"We are very glad to have signed Ryuji and Luciano for the 2014-15 season. Both players have won the I-League and Federation Cup and that experience will be invaluable to our young squad,” Chirag Tanna, Pune FC Head Operations remarked.
The two players are the first foreign recruits to be signed under new coach Karim Bencherifa. This is not the first time the trio will be working together as Suoeka and Luciano were also pivotal to the Salgaocar FC side which won the I-League under Bencherifa in 2010-12.
“Both are good players, and above all good humans too. And their experience will help guide the youngsters at Pune FC,” Bencherifa said.
Sueoka thus becomes the third Japanese player to play for Pune FC after Arata Izumi (2009-12) and Daisuke Nishiguchi (2012-13). On the other hand, Sobrosa is the second Brazilian after Edmar Figueira (2009-11) to wear the jersey.
Both the players were plying their trade in Kolkata last year as Suoeka was part of East Bengal while Luciano led the Mohammedan defence.
“Pune FC is a good club as everybody knows. I’m glad to play in a good atmosphere and under a good coach. All clubs in the I-League should become professional like Pune FC. I’m very happy to be part of this unit.
"Karim and I have worked together for long and we know each other already. So it will be easy to play under him," Sueoka told Goal a couple of days ago.
