Dawson Fernandes joins Salgaocar in a one year deal

The attacker has finally decided to come back to his old stomping ground after his impressive stint with the Flaming Oranje...
Dawson Fernandes, the 24-year old Indian forward has been roped in by Salgaocar FC.

"Yes, I have agreed terms with Salgaocar. It's a one-year deal," the Indian striker informed Goal on Friday.

The striker is a product of the Salgaocar academy and went to represent them in a number of youth tournaments. However, the lack of game time for the senior side forced him to opt for a move to local rivals Sporting Clube de Goa.

"I will always be grateful to the Sporting management for giving me a platform to showcase my talent. I made my debut in I-League for them and it was only the performances for the side that resulted in my maiden national team call-up. They have always shown complete faith in me," he remarked.

However, he was happy to return to his boyhood club which came close to winning the league title last season.

"I left Salgaocar because there were three-to-four set strikers in the team that time and I felt that I would never get ample game time. But now, it feels great to come back to the club I had been part of since I was 14 years old. The management wanted my signature and due to some personal reasons, I have completed the switch," he informed.

Fernandes suffered a horrible knee injury at the start of the season that saw him limited to only three I-League starts. He played his last match in the competition back in November and was replaced by Jeje Lalpekhlua in the Indian squad for the friendlies against Phillipines and Nepal.

"I know it has become harder for me to break into the national team with so many other talented players coming up. Still, I am fit now and I have confidence in my capabilities. I hope I will be able to don the Blue jersey soon," he signed off.
