Santosh Trophy Round-up: Goa defeated, Bengal held

Tamil Nadu downed Goa 3-2 in a group B clash of the Santosh Trophy at the Kachenjunga Stadium, Siliguri on Thursday.

It was the Goans who started better of the two sides but found themselves reeling 2-0 down as S Karthick and A Raegan struck for the southern side.

However Joel Sequiera soon pulled one back before the half-time as he headed home from a Sachin Gawas pass.

Six minutes after the break and the Goan duo combined again with Sequiera finds the back of the net yet again.

Goa should have taken the lead when Alvito’s shot came off the upright. Thereafter goalkeeper Juliao Raegan was rushed to hospital due to a head injury.

It was in the injury time that Ashok Kumar scored the winner for Tamil Nadu to win them full points from the tie.

Meanwhile Bengal failed to make a mark against Punjab in a goalless affair. The eastern state dominated the opening 20 minutes but thereafter were kept on the back foot by the opposition.

Kartick Kisku had a chance to put Bengal ahead but his effort from cleared off the line by a rival defender. Bengal had to thank goalkeeper Debjit Majumder for keeping them in the tie in the second half as Punjab wasted a couple of golden opportunities.
