Prayag United’s big spending ways continue, as the Kolkatan club today revealed their new signing, Costa Rican midfielder Carlos Hernandez for the forthcoming season.
Having finished seventh last season, the acquisition of the 2006 World Cupper will give a further boost to Sanjoy Sen’s side, who in their bid to challenge for the league title and an AFC Cup spot have already paid huge amounts to secure the signing of stalwarts like Ranti Martins, Subrata Paul, Gouramangi Moirangthem amongst others.
"I am really happy to be associated with Prayag United Sports Club. I am looking forward to this new opportunity and challenges. It has indeed been a big decision to move to India, but I feel that there is this huge zest and enthusiasm for football here. I am excited to be part of this excellent team, and hope to contribute to the success of the team in the coming season," Hernandez said.
Prior to embarking on this Indian adventure, the Costa Rican International had represented Australian A-League club Melbourne Victory, for whom he scored a total of 36 goals in 122 games in 5 seasons, including 10 goals last term, which saw him finish as the top scorer of the Melbourne based club last season.
The former recipient of the Johnny Warren Award for best player in the Australian A-League in 2009-10 was released by his club after failing to agree on new terms, with the player claiming that the club asked him to take a pay cut, a charge the team denied, alleging that they offered him a contract worth more than $250,000 a season.
Hernandez has also represented his country at all levels, having played at the U-20 World Youth Championship held in Argentina in 2001 as well as the 2004 Summer Olympics for Costa Rica and then going on to represent his nation in the 2006 World Cup. He has till date scored seven goals in 35 appearances for the national team.
