ONGC | The automatic choice

It Wasn't Easy The First Time

Having played in the I-League last season, and getting relegated in their maiden stint, ONGC are automatic contenders to fight for a place in next term's top flight.

Although they faced the drop in the 2010-2011 season, it has to be noted that the Mumbai based unit did manage to shock East Bengal to a 1-0 defeat in their campaign which however ended in a lost cause.

Aizawl FC & United Sikkim FC | The North-eastern sisters

Bhaichung Bhutia Is Still Around

Preliminary Group Stage
Team  P  W  D  L  GS  GA  GD
United Sikkim FC  6  4  1  1  18  11   7
Aizawl FC  6  4  1  1  11   4   7

Aizawl FC earned a shot at the the qualification scenario with four wins, one draw and one loss - the same as Bhaichung Bhutia's United Sikkim FC whose lone loss came at the hands of none other than Aizawl in the last match of the preliminary round played at Silchar.

In the quest to increase the recognition of football in the North East, in terms of the number of teams to play in the I-League after Shillong Lajong FC became the first from the region to take the national challenge, it will be interesting if the fans will be forced to split their loyalties.

Coming from the capital of Mizoram, Aizawl was formed in the year 1984 and was certified to play a role in this term's second division competition after it was given the green signal by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in January 2012.

Vasco SC & Mohammedan SC | Tougher times ahead

The Black & Whites Have Company

Preliminary Group Stage
Team  P  W  D  L  GS  GA  GD
Mohammedan SC  7  6  1  0  15  4  11
Vasco SC  7  5  1  1  16   6  10

In the Delhi round of matches, Mohammedan Sporting Club held a slight edge over Vasco SC beating the latter by a one-goal margin, but the Goans also enjoyed a good run of wins to rule the table along with the Kolkata outfit.

Both these clubs need no introduction as they have enjoyed a rich history in the past and have the experience of playing in the top division under their belts which will make it a contest to watch between the two.

Kalighat FC & Royal Wahingdoh FC | It's game on

Giant Slayers In The Making?

Preliminary Group Stage
Team  P  W  D  L  GS  GA  GD
Royal Wahingdoh FC  7  5  2  0  18  7  11
Kalighat FC  7  5  1  1  20   6  14

The battle in Cuttack saw Kalighat FC score an emphatic 9-0 victory over Quartz FC in their hunger for growth from nobody to somebody.

Royal Wahingdoh FC will be remembered for their 2-1 victory over Mohun Bagan which was followed by a 2-1 win over Churchill Brothers SC in the Federation Cup 2011.

On the other hand, Kalighat FC was formed in 1922 but only recently gained their affiliation with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) - in January this year - to participate in the second division.
