East Bengal head coach Biswajit Bhattacharya has resigned on Monday morning by sending an e-mail to the club hierarchy, a senior official of the side has confirmed. Goal had revealed about the development last night and even before the team returned to Kolkata, the former Indian international had decided to part ways with the club.
The Kolkata giants were dismantled by a brilliant Bengaluru FC show on Sunday and the coach has taken the responsibility of the club's poor show. Under Bhattacharya's tutelage, the outift never really got going in the I-League but remained in the title-hunt mainly due to the short timeline of the competition.
In Bhattacharya's absence, Sanjay Maji will be taking over the reins while Sammy Omollo and Debjit Ghosh are expected to remain part of the coaching staff. Omollo was arguably the best ever foreign defender in the club's history while Maji and former India international Debjit have also played for the club.
However, the officials will be eager to find a makeshift coach before the Federation Cup as the club will try to make up for yet another failure on the national stage.
