Sporting Clube de Goa win Goa Professional League 2015

The Mateus Costa coached outfit had been leading the pack for quite some time and have now brought home the silverware.

Sporting Clube de Goa were confirmed as the champions of Goa Professional League on Wednesday afternoon as fellow title contenders Churchill Brothers dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Calangute.

Following this result, the Flaming Oranje now have an unsurpassable 5 point lead over the Red Machines, with one fixture remaining for both the teams. Sporting now have 36 points from 17 matches, while Churchill have 31 from as many encounters. Salgaocar, the defending champions have only 20 points from 15 ties and may even fail to make it to the top four.

Sporting relied mostly on young players in the local league, but were also aided heavily by an in-form Odafa Okolie who led the team from the front. Among the young Indian players, the likes of Joyner Lourenco, Kamaljit Singh and Marcus Mascarenhas chipped in with consistent performances. The new champions will play the last match of the competition against Vasco SC on Thursday before their last gasp preparation for the I-League.
