Anwar Ali, the former India international, is all set to join Mohun Bagan ahead of the Federation Cup, Goal can reveal.
The central defender, who pulled off a number of brilliant performances for the Indian Super League (ISL) franchise Delhi Dynamos and featured in Goal's best Indian XI, will now join the Kolkata outfit on loan for the 2014-15 season.
Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen had been talking about his wish to strengthen the defense for quite some time now and he has zeroed in on Kerala Blasters defender Sandesh Jhingan as a remedy to his defensive woes.
“I have talked to the club to try and bring Sandesh but nothing is confirmed yet. It will be good if he joins but I will fight with the resources I have for now. Let’s see what happens,” Sen said after the practice session on Friday.
However, with arch rivals East Bengal also interested in Jhingan and reported interests from foreign clubs also on the table, the Mariners had decided to enter negotiations with Anwar Ali.
The former JCT and Dempo SC player was in talks with Bharat FC for the last couple of weeks, but now looks set to don the Green and Maroon colours, with the formalities between the club and the franchise are set to be signed in the next few hours.
This will be Anwar’s second stint with Mohun Bagan after joining back in 2010 for the first time. After parting ways with the club, the Rurka Kalan youth academy product had represented United Sikkim and Mumbai FC in the I-League.
Though Bagan have already submitted their final 20 for the Federation Cup on the deadline of 22nd December, it remains to be seen whether they make any further changes to accommodate Anwar after they strike a deal.
