Mohammedan Sporting completed the process of signing three players who had pledged their alliance with IMG-Reliance on loan three players on Monday evening to become the first club to breach the decision taken earlier this year by the I-League Professional Football Clubs' Association (IPFCA).
Syed Rahim Nabi, Manish Maithani and Luis Barreto put pen to paper for the Black and Whites while Ishfaq Ahmed and Mehrajuddin Wadoo will soon join the boat as they are scheduled to land in Kolkata on Tuesday morning.
Mohammed Kamaruddin, a top official from the club confirmed about the move, and said, “We are taking these five players for now. We will again check the status of a few more players after a few days,” he told Goal.
The Kolkata outfit had a dismal start to the season losing all three of their opening fixtures. Though they opened their account against Rangdajied United last weekend with a win, their lack of depth in the squad was apparent.
Nabi returns to his old stomping ground, while Maithani will continue to have his base in Kolkata after spending a few seasons with Mohun Bagan in the past. Luis Barreto will be an important addition as the team has suffered in the first few matches due to the horrendous display from goalkeeper Somnath Khara.
This may well open floodgates for the I-League clubs to sign players from the IMG-Reliance pool and the vice versa, i.e. the corporate giants taking players from I-League clubs. Many of the I-League clubs are creeping in silently to the picture, preparing moves for the other players left in the pool.
Mohun Bagan and Dempo SC are close to rope in players from the disbanded Arrows side in the coming days, sourced close to Goal confirmed.
