Dempo SC are known not to make too many changes in their squad as over the years the backbone of the team has remained the same. Not many clubs have been able to do that except for Mahindra United recently.
“You can’t go on changing the players. When players sign for Dempo it’s about commitment. We have retained all our boys,” said Armando Colaco with the sole exceptions of Dharamjit Singh and Jerry Jirsanga whose contracts will not be extended.
Despite having missed several of their star players throughout the season, the players who filled in did more than a satisfactory job which helped the club eventually beat their rivals to win the I-League.
“That’s the beauty of Dempo. If somebody is not there, someone else comes in and delivers.
“The credit goes to our chairman, Mr. Srinivas Dempo as he has a lot of faith in the team. There is a lot of warmth and affection in our squad. Our boys have put their best foot forward,” said Armando.
Dempo’s I-League triumph means that they shall once again try their luck of making it into the AFC Champions League by playing the play-off which happens to be in the month of February generally. The last time Dempo lost 3-0 to Al Sharjah of UAE and had to be content by playing in the AFC Cup.
“I want the team to qualify for the Champions League now and we shall have a go provided India releases our players on time,” added Armando.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) plans to keep a group of 30 players from the start of the next season until the end of January as part of their preparation and participation in the 2011 Asian Cup.
