In what was a disappointing show from the I-League champions, Pailan Arrows made the most of their chances to hand the Goan giants their fifth successive defeat...

Dempo SC were handed a morale crushing 2-0 defeat by Pailan Arrows at the Tilak Stadium in Goa, all but ending their hopes of retaining the I-League crown. Goals from Holicharan Narzary in the 2nd minute and Alwyn George in the 85th minute had sealed their fate.

The hosts had left John Menyongar on the bench, giving Joaquim Abranches a start, who partnered Koko Sakibo in attack, as they went for a two pronged attack.

The away side meanwhile gave Sayan Roy a start in goal, with Soram Poirei suspended. Alwyn George meanwhile started just behind Seiminlen Doungel and Holicharan Narzary in attack, with Prabir Das being benched

The visitors sprung into action right away and in the second minute Holicharan Narzary's header came off the post after Dempo keeper Laxmikant Kattimani failed to read Pritam Kotal's cross coming in from the right, as he palmed it to the striker's path.

It was disaster for the hosts just after two minutes as their defense was found sleeping when Narzary waltzed in between the two central defenders and got at the end of a delightful Kotal pass and made no mistake in placing the ball past Kattimani in goal.

Playing on the counter, Arthur Papas' wards were creating havoc among the Dempo lines as Doungel linked up brilliantly with Alwyn George and Narzary.

In the 12th minute, Koko Sakibo was guilty of wasting a golden opportunity to equalise as Anthony Pereira had laid the ball across his path after Clifford Miranda's inch perfect cross from the right. However, Sakibo could only head over the bar.

In the 26th minute, it was Abranches who was found guilty as he headed Anthony Pereira's measured cross just wide of Sayan Roy in goal.

The Arrows replied with a missed chance of their own after Shaiju Mon had found Alwyn in the box completely unmarked and it was only Cresson Antao's timely clearance that prevented them from doubling their lead, as Alwyn had rounded the keeper with ease.

As the second half was underway, Koko Sakibo and Clifford Miranda combined well in the 51st minute giving the Nigerian a chance to shoot, but he chose to pass it to Anthony Pereira whose shot was blocked by Sayan.

Dempo were then reduced to ten men after Antao received his second yellow card of the evening in the 54th minute, being earlier booked in the 35th minute.

A minute after the hour mark, a long lob by Abranches was chested down by Miranda who then tried an audacious chip over Sayan Roy, but failed to put enough power behind it, allowing Roy to effect a save.

Two Dempo substitutes combining together in the 74th minute then resulted in another opportunity, as Joy Ferrao set up John Menyongar on his left, whose shot was punched out by Sayan Roy keeping his team's lead intact.

The AIFF developmental side hit back with a characteristic sucker punch just five minutes from the end of regulation side when Doungel's cross from the left was nodded in calmly by Alwyn George.

In spite of six minutes being added on, Dempo failed to make any inroads and were relegated to their fifth defeat in a row.
