Mumbai FC 1-2 Salgaocar FC: Oliveira's winner seals three points

Salgaocar FC

Derrick Pereira's side recorded their first win in ten matches or so as they downed Mumbai FC....

Salgaocar FC bounced back from the 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Shillong Lajong to edge past Mumbai FC in their second group C encounter at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi. Mattthew Foschini gave the Goan outfit the lead which was cancelled by NP Pradeep at the start of the second half. However Gilbert Oliveira was at hand to dispatch the penalty to win three points for his side.

Mumbai FC started on a brighter note when Yusif Yakubu released Ahmad Hatifie and the Afghan forced a save from Salgaocar goalkeeper Karanjit Singh in the very first minute.

Augustin Fernandes should have done better from a Gilbert Oliveira cross from the left as his header went wide in the ninth minute.

However three minutes later, Matthew Foschini whipped in a gem of a free-kick to find the back of the net after Darryl Duffy had been fouled.

Before the half hour mark, Mumbai FC goalkeeper Nidhinlal palmed away a shot by Oliveira and the the former rushed out to ensure that the ball didn’t fall at the feet of an onrushing Clifton Dias.

It was a battle for possession between the two sides with neither being able to control the proceedings.

Francis Fernandes did all the spadework on the right wing to send in a cross toward Bikash Jairu, whose header came off Peter Costa, while Mumbai substitute Sehnaj Singh shot wide just before the half-time whistle.

Immediately after crossing over, NP Pradeep's rasping shot from around the edge of the box left Karanjit Singh with no chance as Mumbai FC scored the equaliser after Henry Ezeh laid it on the platter for the former India international.

Mumbai FC substitute Rohit Mirza was however guilty of a handball in the box and Oliveira stepped forward to convert it from the spot in the 74th minute.

Karanjit Singh dived to his left to send the ball over his post from an Anwar Ali header after Nicholas Rodrigues’ had sent in a pinpoint delivery from a free-kick in the 81st minute.

Salgaocar FC survived a scare in the 87th minute after Chika Wali was guilty of bringing down Henry Ezeh inside the box. Yusif Yakubu struck the resultant penalty into the crossbar as the Green and Whites held on to register their first win.

Both sides ended the game with ten men as Rohit Mirza and Clifton Dias picked up their second yellow cards and were rightly given their marching orders by referee A. Rowan.
