The two teams settled for a point with the home side being disappointed with a penalty not being awarded in their favour...

Mohammedan Sporting and Dempo SC played out a 0-0 draw at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata in a round twelve I-League encounter on Saturday evening.

Bola Moshood made two changes from their last game as Josimar Martins and Nirmal Chettri started for the Kolkata outfit.

Dempo were without the services of Simon Colosimo and Shinnosuke Honda with the two defenders being injured while coach Arthur Papas hadn’t travelled with the team due to personal reasons.

The Goan side were dealt an early blow after Beto had to be stretchered off after experiencing pain in his groin while defending a free-kick. Jeje Lalpekhlua was thrown into the mix to lead the line with Holicharan Narzary and Alwyn George playing behind him.

Dempo were comfortable in possession but failed to create clear cut goal scoring opportunities while Mohammedan resorted to long balls being punted towards their two strikers.

Just after the half hour mark, Tolgay Ozbey galloped down the right and unleashed a powerful shot which saw the Dempo custodian collect it safely.

Clifford Miranda, who was being deployed in the middle of the park, saw his effort from distance just miss the target with the Mohammedan goalkeeper rooted to his spot.

Tolgay had the best chance of the half but failed to make the most of it. Ishfaq Ahmed’s cross into the box saw Selwyn Fernandes’ header go as far as Tolgay who with the goal at his mercy, shot over.

After the break, Alywn had a chance to put his side ahead but he squandered the chance by failing to connect from a corner-kick despite being unmarked.

In the 53rd minute, Tolgay Ozbey missed a sitter as Kattimani did well to deny the Australian after the former was set up by Anthony Soren.

Substitute Ashim Biswas brought the crowd on their feet with his left footed attempt on the volley just missing the target by a couple of inches.

Play was held up at least for three minutes after the match commissioner halted the action following some bottles being hurled on the field.

Selwyn put in a brilliant tackle to deny Josimar a chance to go one-on-one with the goalkeeper as the Brazilian went tumbling down hoping to win a penalty which wasn’t given much to his disappointment. However from the ensuing corner-kick, Jeje handled the ball inside the bos and Mohammedan’s appeal fell on deaf ears.

Thereafter Mohammedan continued to exert pressure and created a couple of half chances but not much came of them. The tie ended goal-less as neither side took the game by the scruff of the neck and ended with a point apiece.
