Derrick Pereira’s side maintain their hundred percent record in the country’s top division league with yet another win in their bag...
Salgaocar FC registered their second win in the 2013-14 season’s I-League campaign in as many games as they eased past Mohammedan Sporting 3-0 at the Duler Stadium, Goa on Sunday.
Darryl Duffy opened the scoring before the half-time before Claude Gnakpa doubled the lead three minutes after the break. Augustin Fernandes’ goal killed off the hopes the Kolkata outfit had of making a comeback.
Derrick Pereira made no changes to his eleven from the previous game against Churchill Brothers which they won a couple of weeks ago. Meanwhile, Mohammedan coach Bola Masood brought in Anthony Soren to replace Samson Ramengmawia.
The first opportunity came towards the home side as Claude Gnakpa ended up side netting instead of squaring the ball for Duffy who was waiting inside the box. Mohammedan’s Israil Gurung should have done better when his shot deflected off Josimar to go wide after Rahul Kumar’s clearance from a Tolgay Ozbey cross went straight to him.
Ozbey’s movement in the final third caused a lot of problems for Salgaocar, though Chika Wali did well to man the defense. In the 28th minute, Gurung’s shot saw Karanjit Singh pull off a finger tip save and thereafter block Penn Orji on the rebound to keep the score-line intact.
The deadlock was broken when Francis Fernandes, Clifton Dias and Duffy combined well with the latter slotting the ball home.
After the break, Mohammedan should have found the equaliser through Josimar after Gurung did well to find Brazilian in space with only the goalkeeper to beat. However, with Karanjit Singh beaten by the cross, an alert Augustin Fernandes cleared the danger to keep the score-line 1-0.
Nicolau Colaco sent a searching ball for Gnakpa and with the Mohammedan goalkeeper beaten to the flight of the ball, all that the Ivorian-born French striker had to do was shoot the ball into the open net to make it 2-0.
Salgaocar scored another in the 64th minute through Augustin Fernandes who nodded in a delightful Gilbert Oliviera cross from the left.
It could have been far worse for the Black and Whites as Khara was caught off his line by Duffy whose overhead chip landed on top of the net.
Mohammedan substitute Ajay Singh had a chance towards the end after being put through by Josimar but the striker’s shot was well saved by Karanjit in goal.
Mohammedan were made to pay for the profligacy upfront and a poor defense. Credit goes to Salgaocar FC coach Derrick Pereira as his side have six points from their two outings so far.
